Edit photos using a single layer in Photoshop

Edit Photoshop photos with one layer

Would you like to retouch the photo simply and naturally? Learn how to edit photos using the yellow color channel. This technique can also be used to highlight skin details for a dramatic look or reduce wrinkles, freckles and dark circles

Step 1

Open the photo you want to edit in Photoshop. The photo should be sufficiently detailed and the skin should ideally be free of makeup.

Step 2

We will use the yellow color channel. To get there, we need to convert the photo to CMYK format (Image -> Mode -> CMYK Colors)

Step 3

In the Channel palette (Window -> Channels), select Yellow Channel. As you can see, the yellow channel most reveals imperfections on the skin. Copy this layer using (Select -> All) and then (Edit -> Copy)

Step 4

Now we need to edit the photo back to RGB mode so we can further edit it. Instead of converting it again, it would ruin the image quality even more. All we have to do is go back to the beginning. Press ALT + CTRL + Z again until you get the original photo back. Then click Edit -> Paste to paste only the yellow channel that we copied as a new layer.

Step 5

Change the layer mode to Overlay. You should immediately see the effect that we reduce a little by reducing the Opacity

Step 6

To hide skin imperfections, invert the layer: Image -> Adjust -> Invert. Change the layer mode to Soft Light, and then lower the opacity of the layer until you like the photo.

Step 7

You can also add a layer mask so that the change is only visible in skin areas. It depends on you because the photo should look nice in most cases without masking. However, if you would like to do this, you can use Layer -> Layer Mask -> Hide All. Select the Brush tool (make sure the foreground color is set to white), and then draw with a soft brush around the skin. If you use Photoshop CS6, you can also use the skin color feature in the color range selection. Click Select -> Color range and select “Skin tones” from the menu and check “Detect faces”. Press OK and Photoshop will put all skin colors in your selection.
